In the teaching of spoken Chinese as a foreign language,there are more and more types of speaking materials,and the design of exercises has become a key concern in the process of writing teaching materials.Exercises,as a form of intensive training in speaking materials,reflect the teaching philosophy and principles followed by the textbook writers on the one hand,and test the learners’ knowledge and teaching effectiveness on the other.The effectiveness of the exercises in the materials affects the learners’ ability to internalise the language points into language skills and to apply them in their daily communicative life.Effective design of speaking exercises can promote the efficiency of teaching and learning,help learners to successfully produce oral output and achieve the goal of improving oral communication skills.This article takes the exercise design of two sets of quasi-advanced level oral Chinese textbooks based on output tasks,namely New Era Oral Chinese and New Target Oral Chinese,as the object of study.By examining the exercise task design of the two sets of oral teaching materials and making comparisons,we find out the characteristics and problems of the exercise design of the two sets of teaching materials and put forward our own suggestions,so as to draw lessons for the design of task-based oral Chinese teaching materials at the intermediate and advanced levels.The paper is structured as follows.The structure of this paper is as follows,divided into six main parts.The first part is the introduction,which introduces the significance of the topic,a review of the relevant theoretical studies,a description of the research subject,and the research methodology,and compares the previous research results in terms of research on the writing of Chinese speaking materials,research on the setting of exercises,and the theoretical basis of the two sets of speaking materials that are the subject of the study.The second part compares the distribution of questions between the two sets of speaking textbooks in terms of the number of questions and the statistical basis for the number of questions.The third part compares the distribution of the total number of questions and the average number of questions per unit in the two textbooks in terms of the types of questions.The fourth section looks at the content of the exercises,comparing the question types in terms of language form,content and discourse structure.The fifth section contains recommendations,which provide some suggestions for the results of the above analysis.The sixth section concludes with a summary of the text and a reflection on the shortcomings of the paper.
