In daily life, people often avoid disgusting or scary video images, but rarely avoid disgusting or scary text descriptions. It inspires us that the emotional impact of video is stronger than that of text.Is the emotional effect of scenes stronger than that of text descriptions? What are the factors that influence this difference?Previous studies have shown that the emotional effects of facial expressions, voice intonation, and scene pictures are stronger than those of words. To a certain extent it implies that the affects elicited by scenes are stronger than those by words. However,i)previous studies did not control the content of stimulus between modals.ii)Simple facial expressions, voice intonation, static scene pictures and scattered words are not logically coherent and are far from the real situation. In addition, previous studies have shown that concreteness interacts with the emotional attributes of words and thus affects the emotional effect of words.Whether there is a factor similar to concreteness-richness of detail, regulating the emotional effect of video? Compared with text, the information conveyed by video is richer in details,so the emotional effect elicited by videos should be stronger than that of texts.Study 1 used a subjective rating method to score the valence and arousal of emotional video materials on a nine-point scale. The group of videos with richer details induced stronger subjective feelings.Study 2 applied the priming paradigm to explore the priming effect of different emotional stimuli on the neutral surprised faces. We used emotional videos and texts as priming stimuli and neutral surprised faces as target stimuli and characterizing the priming effect with surprise scores. At the same time, the recognition task was applied. And the subjects were required to judge whether the presented videos or texts had been watched in the previous task.As a memory index, the right rate to priming stimuli in the recognition task reflected affect differences between videos and texts. At last, the subjective emotional feelings of different materials was measured by rating. The results implied that neutral video stimuli evoked stronger surprise affect than neutral text stimuli. And positive video stimuli evoked stronger surprise affect than positive text stimuli. There were no significant differences in surprise rating behind negative priming stimuli between the two modalities. In short, video stimuli evoked stronger emotional effects than text stimuli. The results of the recognition task showed that the accuracy of videos is higher than that of texts, and the accuracy of emotional stimuli is higher than that of neutral stimuli. In addition,to convey similar content, text has a heavier cognitive load than video. All above, the emotional effect of video is indeed stronger than that of text.Richness of detail and cognition load are closely related to affect differences between modalities. The richer details and lower cognition resource the stimuli contain and cost, the stronger emotional effect it elicited.
