Wine occupies an important position in Chinese culture, and has a great influence on China’s politics, economy, literature, and other fields.Hong Sheng’s Chang Sheng Dian is one of the four classical Chinese operas.Wine culture is described in a variety of ways, including the name of the wine, wine vessels, the action of urging others to drink, etc. At present, there are three mainstream versions of Chang Sheng Dian, namely the three English versions translated by three groups of translators: Xu Yuanchong and Xu Ming,Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang, and He Yubin. These three versions were created at different times and for different translation purposes. In order to explore the cognition of translators in different cognitive backgrounds, this thesis will select the three versions with more readers as research objects.Cognitive Translatology(CT)believes that translation is processed by translators through interactive experience and cognition of the real world. It gives this research a multi-perspective.There are six elements in CT: embodiment, interactivity, creativity, textuality, harmony and the two worlds(the objective world and the cognitive world)that translation reflects. The last three elements of these six elements are based on the text.Because the research object of this thesis is on the lexical level, the first three elements are selected for discussion. This thesis will take CT as the theoretical framework, and adopt the methods of big data, statistics and corpus-based approach for data collection.Based on embodiment, interactivity and creativity, this thesis will make a study of the 48 examples of wine culture in the three English versions of Chang Sheng Dian. This research shows that in terms of embodiment, except for Gladys Yang, the other translators are all native Chinese translators who can better understand the original text,so they can obtain the same or similar experience as the original author through cognition and understanding. In terms of interactivity, the three groups of translators are all based on the experience and interaction of the text and the objective world, taking into account the relationship between the translator and the reader, and strive to achieve better translation effects. In terms of creativity, due to the differences in cognition among translators,in order to allow readers to better understand the information that the author of the original text wants to convey, translators utilize their creativity in individual thinking from word selection, sentence selection, strategy selection, etc. This thesis finds that by adopting CT in the study in translation of wine culture in Chang Sheng Dian, the understanding of translation process can be deeper. And through the discussion of different translation expressions with the characteristics of wine culture, this thesis hopes to accumulate the materials of translation of wine culture and improve the understanding of wine culture. With the limitation of time and author’s research ability, the explanation and research of the terms related to wine culture need to be further explored. This thesis hopes that in the future, further research on wine culture can be conducted based on more traditional Chinese classics,so as to promote Chinese wine culture to go abroad.
