Chinese wine culture exists in daily life and is reflected in Chinese classics.Culture going out under the background of the new era should include wine culture going out. However, research on the translation of wine culture in classics is limited both at home and abroad,so it is necessary to strengthen the translation of wine culture classicize.Given the wide range of wine culture in the broad sense, the wine culture in this thesis refers to the narrow sense of wine culture, including materials, containers, types, and etiquette and virtues of wine..Cognitive translatology(CT),which covers the integration of cognitive linguistics, cognitive philosophyand translatology,is taken as the research basis.Studying the English translation of The Book of Songs by William Jennings and Wang Rongpei, two translators use the embodiment view, innovative view, and “two worlds” in their translation process. The purpose is to explore the role of CT in their translation process.Based on the above four aspects, the author takes 32 wine-related examples and their corresponding translations from the original text of The Book of Songs and make a comparative study by qualitative and quantitative analysis. It is hoped that quantitative research can be used to analyze and compare translation strategies between the two translators, and qualitative research to compare the cognitive and expressive differences between them.Due to the background and content the source text involved, the author employs multimodal forms and corresponding graphs to analyze the text, which visually shows how the two translators’ translations differ under their understanding. For translators with different cultural backgrounds, their cognition and experience of the source text cover all aspects.CT holds that translation is a creative work produced by the translator under his understanding of the world with his feeling, but it should be creative to a certain extent.“Two worlds” in translation contain not only the world of the source and target language but also the world of reader and translator.By contrasting and analyzing their translations, researchers can retain commonality, distinguish personality, and find the best version. As a source language translator,Wang Rongpei is more accurate in grasping the text and its connotative meaning. While, there are some limitations on target language translation. The research shows that his translation pays more attention to the coordination between two languages. As a target language translator,William Jennings outperforms the former in his experience. However, the source language needs to be recreated when dealing with relevant images.Jennings’ translation pays more attention to the acceptance and understanding of the target language world, which is beneficial to understand the translation. The author hopes that this study will enhance the educational value of CT in the translation of ancient Chinese classics through a contrastive analysis of the translation of wine culture in The Book of Songs. At the same time, researchers are expected to pay more attention to the neglected wine culture research in the foreign translation of classics and the comparative study on wine culture cognition and translation presentation by translators from different cultural backgrounds to better promote Chinese culture, including wine culture going out. |
