Novel and drama are two major literary genres, which always occupy an important position in literary research.Anton Pavlovic Chekhov was an outstanding Russian short story master and a distinguished dramatist in the turn of 19th-20thcentury.Up to now,the research on Chekhov’s novel and drama has never stopped, and the research angles and methods have become more and more diverse. However, the creation of these two genres mostly be analyzed as a separate entity. The identity of both a novelist and a dramatist,in fact, determines that he cannot get rid of the mutual influence of the two identities in the process of novel and drama creation. It is precisely because of this that the dramatization of his novel and the novelization of his drama are formed. This master’s thesis takes some of Chekhov’s representative short stories Chameleon,The Death of a Civil Servant,The Man in a Case,Ward No.6 and so on,four classic plays Seagulls,Uncle Vanya,Three Sisters,Cherry Garden as the research object. The thesis analyzes the dramatic writing skills used in his short stories and the novel-writing techniques used in his plays, then explore the origin of the dramatization of novel creation and the novelization of drama creation. It is found that the dramatization of Chekhov’s short stories is manifested in the dramatization of the narrative structure, the dramatization of the concise narrative style, and the dramatic dialogue used in character creation. The novelization of his drama is manifested in the static narrative effect, the poetic lyrical techniques, and the shaping techniques of non-central characters and typical environments. It was inevitable to form this creative feature because of the demand of the times for new forms of literature and the drive of personal artistic exploration. This master’s thesis aims to further understand the spiritual core and artistic value of Chekhov’s creation by exploring the dramatization of Chekhov’s short stories and the novelization of drama.
