Meaning And Subjectivity:A Cultural Semiotics Interpretation Of The Master And Margaret

This thesis is to belong to foreign language linguistics and applied linguistics subject poetics and cultural semiotics direction of interdisciplinary research,through the perspective of cultural semiotics Mikhail Bulgakov ’s(1891-1940)The Master and Margaret,specifically is to use Lotmanian cultural semiotics theory to interpret the novel text.This paper analyzes the unique meaning derivation mechanism of The Master and Margaret and tries to reveal the interpretable space of the text instead of exploring the definite meaning of the text,to provide a path worthy of reference for The Russian literary criticism in China.When studying the internal regeneration mechanism of meaning in literary texts,Yuri Lotman once proposed that "symbols form texts,texts form cultures,and cultures form symbol circles".It forms a complex system in which the meaning derivation mechanism of each level promotes the generation of new meaning.This paper develops according to the text subjectivity,the creator subjectivity,and the receiver subjectivity.Based on Lotman’s theory of text,the paper analyzes how The Master and Margaret achieves its unique meaning generation mechanism through the communication and collision between languages from various perspectives.In the aspect of the creator’s subjectivity,the paper analyzes the process of Bulgakov’s creation of The Master and Margarita in the uncertain and turbulent times.In terms of the author’s subjectivity,the author places it in a broader symbolic space,that is,the social and historical background,and analyzes the process of Bulgakov’s creation of The Master and Margarita in the uncertain and turbulent times by using the theory of the symbolic circle put forward by Lotman.From the perspective of Lotman’s cultural semiotics,this paper explores the subjectivity of text,writer’s creation,and reader’s acceptance,and points out that the significance of The Master and Margaret is not only derived from the text mechanism and writer’s creation,but also derived from the subjectivity accepted by readers.This shows that the meaning of literary text is diverse and dynamic,and the main purpose of literary criticism is not to give a certain evaluation of the text,but to stimulate the imagination of readers,improve their aesthetic ability and literary accomplishment.
