Research On The Expression Of Cheng Zhang’s Flower And Bird Painting

This dissertation takes Cheng Zhang’s flower-and-bird paintings as the research object and aims to investigate Cheng’s work via two dimensions,the artistic expression and the formation of his work,in the hope that the audience can gain a better understanding of Cheng’s painting style and the profound cultural heritage in his flower-and-bird paintings.The flowers and birds that Cheng pictures in his work are marvelous in ways,like his drawing of the agile shapes,the application of refined colors and the smart use of space.As an all-round master who "appreciates both the elegance and the common",his paintings were distinctive and far ahead from the vision of the painting school at that time.All of these cannot be appreciated without considering the cultural aesthetics,the identity positioning and the personal experience of that time.In view of this,this dissertation decides to begin with an overview of Cheng’s life as the foundation of this research,and then make an in-depth analysis with many of his flower-and-bird works in terms of subject matter,modeling,composition,etc,thereby further exploring how Chen creates his work and the factors behind it,including his personal values and the historical background of that time.Regarding Cheng’s art of painting,this dissertation also elaborates on author’s perspectives about Cheng’s innovation in painting consciousness,and ends with the practical implications that Cheng’s works offer to the author’s painting practices.
