A Contrastive Study On Yang Xianyi And Gladys Yang’s And Xu Yuanchong’s Translations Of Xin Qiji’s Lyrics Utilizing The Appraisal Theory

This paper takes Yangs’（Xianyi and Gladys）and Xu Yuanchong’s translations as examples to make a comparative analysis of the two English versions of Xin Qiji’s lyrics（iambic verse/ Song lyrics,a literary form）with the Appraisal Theory.The comparative analysis of attitudinal,engagement and graduation resources between them provides access to decoding the implicit implications in poems.This thesis probes into the differences and nuances of their translations by these three subsystems.They contribute to a further exploration of underlying meanings of the lyrics.This paper finds it reader-friendly to understand the original lyrics using Appraisal Theory.The main body of this thesis mainly discusses three research questions.1.From the perspective of appraisal theory,how are attitudinal resources in the target texts interpreted and realized by both translators;and what are the differences between these two translated versions of thirteen Xin Qiji’s lyrics?2.How are engagement resources in the target texts interpreted and realized by both translators? What are the differences between these two translated versions of thirteen Xin Qiji’s lyrics from this aspect?3.In the target texts,how are graduation resources interpreted and realized by both translators;and what are the differences between these two translated versions of thirteen lyrics?First of all,this paper finds that the original text is rich in implicit Affect resources and Appreciation resources.There are relatively few Graduation resources in the source text.The Engagement resources in the original text are mainly Monogloss resources,and the wide application of Heterogloss resources is also a striking feature.Secondly,this thesis finds that Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang pay more attention to the use of Affect resources during translation,while Xu Yuanchong pays more attention to the use of Appreciation resources.Xu Yuanchong’s translation is characterized by its use of prosodic structure.Copious rhymes are utilized in his translation and to emphasize author subjectivity.The Yangs concentrate on faithfulness and expressiveness.The total Engagement resources used by Xu Yuanchong is more than that of Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang,but the use of Heterogloss resources by the Yangs is greater than that of Xu.The frequency of Force resources in the Yangs’ and Xu’s versions are significantly higher than Focus resources.Finally,Xu uses more appraisal resources than the Yangs in general,with case by case analysis.
