With the vigorous development of the economy, the development of nuclear power technology is gaining more and more attention in China. Moreover, how to transport spent fuel has become an important research direction in nuclear power technology. Therefore, the Latin American Research Center of the Ministry of Education applied for the translation project of “Research on nuclear waste disposal”,which was undertaken by the Master of Translation & Interpreting Center of Southwest University of Science and technology. The author participated in the translation project and took the task of translating Chapter 2 &Chapter 3 of the English book Spent Fuel Transportation Risk Assessment(NUREG-2125).This book,as the 4th investigation report from US,focuses on the issue of how to transport spent fuel.Studying the development of spent fuel transportation can help us to avoid the unnecessary mistakes, abide by the development strategy of nuclear power and contribute to China’s national defense. It is characterized by a logical as well as highly professional manner, and introduces the risks that happened in transportation and solution to them under various circumstances. This book is of great practical value in providing our professionals with experience in the transportation and storage of spent fuel. This report is based on the English-Chinese translation project of Spent Fuel Transportation Risk Assessment(Chapter 2 & Chapter 3)whose text is in scientific English text.Guided by functional equivalence theory, the translator analyses the original text from four aspects: lexical level, syntactic level, textual level, and stylistic level,in order to lay the foundation for subsequent translation practice. The main translation difficulties in this text are the translation of professional terms, passive sentences and compound sentences.Combining the characteristics of the source text with theoretical guidance, the translator examines the application of translation methods such as the conversion of parts of speech, literal translation, transposition in the English to Chinese translation project in the field of national defence to achieve equivalent effect in the translation as much as possible.Through this translation practice,it can be concluded that the functional equivalence theory plays an important guiding role in translating science and technology texts, which enables the translation to reproduce the content of the original text as much as possible in terms of vocabulary, syntax, text and style. The author analyzes and summarizes the translation methods applied in the translation of science and technology texts, which may hopefully provide help to the future translators on translating science and technology texts.
