Huiben,also known as picture books,are a special genre of children’s literature and are very popular in the field of children’s reading today.Picture books emerged and prevailed in Europe and America,and were translated and introduced to China in the early 21 st century(Wu,2011).As teaching materials for children’s enlightenment,picture books can help children learn English while also help them broaden horizons,stimulate their imagination and improve aesthetic sensibilities.Therefore,the quality of picture book translation is particularly important.Shoddy translations will not only hinder children’s understanding of the content of the story,but also affect their appreciation and learning of their mother tongue.Children’s picture books involve just visual modality,including two semiotic systems of text and image,so picture books also belong to the category of multimodal discourse.There are few researches on the translation of children’s picture books in China,not to mention the research under the guidance of some related theories.Therefore,this report selects nine books of Step Into Reading 3 as translated materials under the guidance of the theory of multimodal discourse analysis.On the one hand,the translator relies on the framework of multimodal discourse analysis proposed by Professor Zhang Delu(2009)to explore the text attributes of children’s picture books at textual levels(including cultural level,context level,content level and expression level).On the other hand,the report explores the relation between the image and the text in children’s picture books based on Nikolajeva and Scott(2000)’s text-image relation system(including symmetrical interaction,enhancing or complementary interaction and contradictory interaction).After analyzing typical cases,the translator concludes that at the textual level,the translation strategy of domestication,the translation methods of literal translation and free translation and the translation techniques of addition,negation and conversion can be adopted.Under the image-text relation system,the translation method of literal translation and the translation techniques of addition and annotation can be adopted.Meanwhile,the translator tries to emphasize the content by making necessary information bold and changing the full stop into exclamation mark.Through interpreting the relation between images and texts,we can grasp the overall meaning of the multimodal discourse in children’s picture books,and then analyze them with specific examples,which will provide useful references for the translation of children’s picture book and promote translation and publication of excellent foreign picture books. |
