Multimodal Discourse Analysis, which emerged in the West as far back as the1990 s,has been widely used in the fields of music, video, architecture, and advertising. In China,Multimodal Discourse Analysis is mostly used to analyze film,TV drama, classroom teaching, and advertisement. However,as a type of multimodal discourse, picture books have long been neglected, not to say the overall study of the translation of a complete picture book from a multimodal perspective. In this thesis, the author makes a comparative study of the two translations of the picture book WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE from the perspective of Multimodal Discourse Analysis. She integrates Halliday's Systematic Functional Grammar and Martinec and Salway's Image-text Relation System into her theoretical framework to analyze the metafunctions of the text and the image-text relations in the original work and compare to those in the translations.Besides, she also tries to discover to what extent the translation works reproduces and changes the metafunctions of the text and the image-text relations in the original work, and analyze the possible reasons for its occurrence. At the same time,to better summarize and analyze the translation phenomenon where the translated works deviate from the original work, this thesis visually describes the portions of the image-text relations in the original and translated works,as well as the shares of the three metafunctions. This thesis shows that the two translations deviate to varying degrees from the the metafunctions of the text and image-text relations in the original work.In the metafunctions of the texts, the two translations enhance the ideational and interpersonal functions in the original work, while weakening the textual function. After analysis, the author finds that the reason behind it is due to differences in English and Chinese language structures and influence of image information on texts. In the image-text relations, the two translations deviate from the original work's status and logico-semantics relations. This phenomenon is due to the particularity of the picture book itself: the information in the image can supplement the text. When the image presents the information that is already presented by the text, the translator may,for linguistic effects or to improve the reader's visual literacy, advance, delay or even omit the text information that has appeared in the image. It can be seen from the above studies that the images in the picture book have a positive effect on the meaning construction of the entire work. Therefore, when translating picture books, translators should improve their visual literacy and have the ability to recognize the interaction between images and texts in order to serve the translation of picture books better.
