Chen Yan is a renowned playwright and writer in contemporary Chinese literature.His novels in the Stage Trilogy,namely The Stage,The Protagonist and The Comedy,are written with the Qin opera stage as the centre of the circle,and they all display a strong realistic style.Before being a writer,Chen Yan was first and foremost a scriptwriter,and his many years of experience in the theatre and working in the theatre were an important factor in the success of his novels,which he portrayed in the Stage Trilogy,such as Diao Shunzi,Yi Qin’e,the four old men of the Cunzi School,the He brothers,etc.A series of characters closely related to the art of Qin opera.As a writer from Shaanxi,Chen Yan has firmly inherited the Shaanxi tradition of realism in his work,and his fictional world is not only a microcosm of the world of opera,but also a true reflection of the changes in Chinese social life at the present time.There is not much information on Chen Yan’s novels from the perspective of realism,and since the third book of the Stage Trilogy,The Comedy,has just been completed,there is a huge research gap.Therefore,this paper chooses to interpret and explain the Stage Trilogy as a whole from the perspective of realism,by comparing it with the works of contemporary realist writers such as Liu Qing,Lu Yao,Chen Zhongshi and Jia Pingwa in Shaanxi.This paper analyzes and summarizes the breakthroughs and innovations in the realist expression of Chen Yan’s Stage Trilogy,and explores the inspiration and significance of Chen Yan’s creation for contemporary literary creation.This thesis contains three parts: the introduction,the body and the conclusion.The introductory part mainly compares the current status of domestic research on Chen Yan’s novels and explains the background and significance of the topic chosen for this thesis.This thesis is based on a review of the literature,which shows that most of the studies on Chen Yan’s novels are on a single work,but there is no master’s thesis on the Stage Trilogy,which is based on the Qin opera stage as a whole,which is an important reason for this thesis.The first chapter compares Chen Yan’s fiction with that of contemporary realist writers such as Liu Qing,Lu Yao,Chen Zhongshi and Jia Pingwa,and analyses the new breakthroughs in the scope and subject matter of Chen Yan’s Stage Trilogy.The second chapter analyses the new features of characterisation in the Stage Trilogy.Chapter 3,on the basis of a close reading of the text,summarises the new changes in the artistic approach of the Stage Trilogy.The fourth chapter summarises the inspirations of the Stage Trilogy for contemporary literary creation.In the concluding section,the main content of the text is summarised and the importance of Chen Yan’s Stage Trilogy to contemporary realist literature in Shaanxi is clearly pointed out.
