Since the end of the Second World War in the twentieth century, collisions of cultures led to an age of culture shocks.Artists began to form their own unique styles of art creation, and art had entered a period of diversified development. As an important Israeli contemporary expressionism artist,Avigdor Arikha’s(1927~2010)paintings were mainly abstract due to his gloomy early life. However, inspired by the flourishing of post-modern art in the mid-twentieth century,Arikha changed his style and began to pursue the most ‘real’ inner beauty. At this time,Arikha’s works were figurative and gained significant influence.Arikha applied his unique aesthetics to his paintings, and his paintings featured the objects using special composition and intense colors. It reflects the most genuine state and feelings of the artist and shows clearly the most “real” attitude of Arikha. This paper mainly studies Arikha’s figurative painting language. The formation and transformation of his style of art are analyzed in the context of his background to further study Arikha’s figurative painting language and his methods of expressing emotions.Through studying Arikha’s figurative painting language,I aim to improve my own aesthetics and painting skills and complete my graduation work.
