Xue Ji,an outstanding calligrapher of the early Tang Dynasty, was born in an aristocratic family, his maternal grandfather was the Hand of the King, Wei Zheng, who collected many calligraphy works of Yu Shinan’s and Chu Suiliang’s.. Xue Ji imitated the works conscientiously so that he gradually had a good handwriting, soon he was well known of his boney calligraphy style, and was honored as one of the four Elites of the early Tang Dynasty, the same as Yu Shinan,Ouyang Xun and Chu Suiliang. What a pity most of Xue Ji’s calligraphy works have been lost except two: the Writing of Prince Shengxian Shone-tablet and the Stone-tablet of Master Xinxing.In the art of calligraphy Xue Ji’s main achievements and contribution laid in the standard script handwriting. After Yu Shinan, Ouyang Xun and Chu Suiliang’s work, Xue Ji had further improved the laws of the standard script handwriting,made the regular script formed to be more mature, he also had highlighted the thin-hard calligraphy style, which came from Chu Suiliang and the two Wangs’style and later affected Liu Gongquan’s, even Song Huizong’s. The style had a far-reaching influence, and Du Fu made the influence further through his verse’Only the Boney Calligraphy Can Gain Access to Miraculous Realm’in the Poem of Li Chao’s Seal Character Calligraphy.Bassed on the two works of Xue Ji’s and the records about him in Chinese calligraphy history, this research for Xue Ji’s calligraphy style will analyse the calligraphy education he had received, the artistic characteristics of his handwriting, his position in Chinese calligraphy history and effect to other calligraphers. Beyond the analysis, this paper will explore the artistic beauty of Xue Ji’s boney calligraphy to affirm its value and meaning in Aesthetics.
