Forms in Chinese painting do not exist alone;all forms in a picture have their own meaning. If one examines the work only from an outward perspective,it is easy to see the painting as a mere social, economic, and cultural expression, while ignoring the technique, structure, and stylistic tradition carried by the work itself. It is easy to see the forms as the result of stylistic evolution and ignore the external meanings embedded in the changes of the forms. The meaning behind the forms must be examined in the context of the specific social background, the audience of the work and the painter himself, and this comprehensive examination is the only way to achieve the overall coverage of the painting’s meaning. The Twelve Views of the Suburban Garden is a set of garden pages created by the late Ming painter Shen Shichong. As the representative painter of the Yunjian school of painting in the Songjiang region at the end of the Ming Dynasty,Shen Shichong had a clear relationship with his teachers and had obvious characteristics of the Yunjian school of painting in his style. The Twelve Views of the Suburban Garden, while carrying Shen’s creative style,is also influenced by the late Ming society, philosophy, garden design philosophy, the viewer’s identity and the painter’s self-awareness.This paper divides the study of the pictorial meaning of "Twelve Views of the Suburban Garden" into three parts: the tradition of mastery, the tradition of subject matter, and the tradition of interaction between the viewer and the painter. The first is the tradition of mastery: firstly, the mastery of Shen Shichong’s painting, through the examination of his social relations to explore the lineage of his mastery and his painting style;secondly, through the analysis of the picture of Twelve Scenes from the Suburban Garden to examine the specific expression of the objects and the expression of the mood of the picture.Secondly, the thematic tradition of the subject matter: through the comparison with "Twelve Views from the Suburban Garden",we examine the difference in the focus of Shen Shichong’s and Chen Lian’s creation, and the influence of the late Ming society, philosophical thought and creative philosophy on the painting of "Twelve Views from the Suburban Garden" through the combination of the picture performance and the late Ming society. We examine the performance of "Twelve Views of the Suburban Garden" during the turning point of garden art in the late Ming Dynasty, explore the influence of the creative philosophy of the late Ming garden on the pictorial meaning, and explore the innovation of "Twelve Views of the Suburban Garden" by combining the angle of framing, composition and social context. The third is the tradition of interaction between the viewer and the painter,in which the pictorial meaning of a painting is influenced by the viewer and the painter’s consciousness in many ways, and the pictorial meaning contained in Twelve Views from the Suburban Garden is explored through the perspective of the viewer’s way of socializing, the ideals of the literati, and the painter himself.
