In mid-late stage of Ming Dynasty, there forms new system of scholars painting which has great scale and extreme influence in Jiangnan area on behalf of Nanjing, Suzhou, Songjiang(Shanghai).It is the important period of scholars painting expansion extremely in our country. scholars painters like to integrate the artistic concept paintings expressed to the construction and landscaping of garden. At the same time, painting theme is extended from natural landscape to Jiangnan garden area. So there forms a new painting style with characteristic of times--landscape of garden theme.In a long period, natural landscape is the main source of inspiration in the creation of landscape painting, and the association between traditional painting art and scenery landscape is very friable. As Ideological and literal life change, the concept of garden is gradually mixed with complex spiritual pursuit, such as art pursuit, literal pursuit and so on. The new concept of mix with garden and landscape replace traditional landscape artistic conception. paintings that express den, courtyard and privacy life begin to appear in great amount. Garden, which is the media of literati to live like a hermit,expresses their desire to live in the nature but not busy cities. It is the main ideology of landscaping creation for literati in mid-late stage of feudal society.Shen Shichong used the theme of Jiangnan garden landscaping as the metaphor of literati's life and ideal. It conforms the trend of artical development, expands the connotation of classical hermit ideas, lead the life pursuit of literati that combines elegance and worldliness, life and art in Jiangnan area since 16th century.This thesis uses situation analysis as the chief research method. By approaches of textology and stylistics it comprehensively textually researches Shen Shichong's only album of garden paintings-Paintings of Rural Garden's Twelve Scenes which is Shen's master work under the historical and cultural environment. Through reading related literature and image information, the thesis all-round unscrambles this album from the angles of its social background, specified contents, origin of schematism, aesthetic value, cultural property and artistic characteristics. Prevalence of literati and seclusion during the middle and later periods of Ming Dynasty has greatly influenced artistic characteristics and further development of landscape paintings on garden of southern Changjiang delta. Through presenting cultural contents and the origin of thought, landscape paintings on gardens reveal scholar-bureaucrats'yearning for ideal life and zeal for building gardens. By researching this topic, this thesis provides image and text information to help modernists to feel and look into Chinese classical culture and cultural scenery. It impersonally and actually appraise the artistic characteristics, spiritual connotation and status on Chinese art history and cultural history of Ming's paintings while it reviews the general picture of literati's paintings in the middle and later periods of Ming Dynasty.
