A Report On E-C Translation Of Textiles:A History（Excerpt） Under Peter Newmark’s Theoretical Background

In the book Textile: A History by Fiona Mc Donald,the history of textiles is elaborated from multiple aspects such as industrial revolution process,textile literature and textile art creation.etc.As an academic technical text related to textile,the book is composed with detailed descriptions and plentiful content.The E-C translation of the book is of great importance to the research on the history of textile.Part four and part five of Textile: A History were selected as the Source Text（ST）of this translation project,to help Chinese readers understanding the history of textile development and promote the textile cultural exchanges between different countries.Guided by Newmark’s translation theory,semantic translation and communicative translation,the translator employed various translation methods to achieve the fidelity and popularity of Target Text（TT）.Concretely speaking,focused on the equivalence of the content and constructure between ST and TT,semantic translation is usually used to transmit the true meaning of ST precisely.While,communicative translation pays more attention to help target readers fully understand the information with expression.In this project,followed with semantic translation,linear translation and repetition were applied to process pronouns and English long sentences in ST,so as to achieve the accurate introduction to the history of the British Industrial Revolution.And under the guidance of communicative translation,translation problems of ST such as English sentence with long and complicate structure,passive sentence and long sentence composed of multiple clauses were analyzed and solved with division,conversion and combination.etc,thus helping the target readers to learn about the history of textile technology and contemporary textile art creation.The translation report is divided into six chapters.Definition of textile history and its research value are introduced in chapter one.Chapter two is the specific description of this task.Pre-translation preparation,in-translation process and post-translation proofreading are introduced in chapter three.Chapter four is the explanation of Peter Newmark’s translation theory: text type,semantic translation and communicative translation.Guided by the above translation theory,translation difficulties are analyzed and solved in chapter five.And the last chapter is the conclusion of reflections and summary of this project.
