The user’s manual, the direct carrier of equipment, provides users with relevant information and plays an important role in import and export trade. An accurate and appropriate translation of an English manual can help users better understand the product and operate it correctly, promoting the product sales to achieve economic value. The report conducts a case study on the translation of The User’s Manual of Contour Measuring Instrument under the guidance of the three-charactered principle of “faithfulness, expressiveness and closeness” put forward by Liu Zhongde. The translation of technical terms and abbreviations, and the rendition of English imperative sentences and passive sentences in the manual will be analyzed in detail. The user’s manual features the frequent use of technical terms objective tone and concise style. In translation, first of all,it is necessary to accurately grasp the meanings of these technical terms and common abbreviations.Secondly, some techniques such as addition and restructuring can be adopted to translate imperative sentences.Thirdly, passive sentences frequently used in the manual are mostly translated into active sentences. In general, case studies mainly from the lexical and syntactic level under the guidance of the principle, some specific translation techniques including omission, addition and restructuring can be employed to realize the adequate function of the translation.By focusing on the analysis of the above four aspects at lexical and syntactic level respectively,it is hoped that the report can provide a reference for the subsequent research in related fields.
