This is an English-Chinese translation practice report. The source text is selected from The Language of Flowers: A Fully Illustrated Compendium of Meaning,Literature, and Lore for the Modern Romantic(The Language of Flowers),written by Odessa Begay. This book contains 50 of the most distinctive and representative flowers in the world. It is a flower-related popular science book that integrates botanical knowledge, folklore, classic mythology, literature and popular culture. The translator selects sections 34-37 and 39-50 as the source text and the research object of the translation practice report. In this practice report, the translator determines the criteria that the target text should follow according to the four characteristics of popular science texts, which are scientificness, popularity, literariness and entertainment.Based on these, the translator also analyzes the translation difficulties encountered in realizing the four characteristics of popular science texts in the process of translation. The difficulty in realizing scientificness mainly focuses on the translation of names of flowers and words with professional meaning, while the difficulty in realizing popularity is reflected in how to deal with common words and complex sentences. In addition,English poetry and songs and some literary expressions in the original text become obstacles to the realization of literariness in the process of translation and how to make the translation more entertaining is also a major difficulty. In response to the problems above, the translator adopts different translation methods. For example, names of flowers and words with professional meaning are handled by choosing established translations, adding annotation within the text and extending the semantics of words. For common words and complex sentences, semantic extension,part-ofspeech conversion, dividing and recasting are used to solve these problems. In English poetry and songs and some literary expressions, the translator chooses to create rhymes and use four-character words to realize literariness. Finally, the translator uses personification rhetoric and colloquial expressions to increase the entertainment of the target text.In this translation practice, the translator adopts appropriate translation methods to make the target text has the characteristics that a popular science text should have.At the same time, the glossary of flower names made by the translator can also offer some help for the translation practice of flower-related popular science books.
