| A popular science book mainly explains scientific and technological methods as well as ideas by means of easy and lively language styles,which is characterized by the technical nature of science,vividness of content and extensiveness of themes.Along with the steady progress of China's high-speed railway diplomacy in recent years,there are many popular science books related to high-speed railways,of which the book China's High-speed Railways issued by China Railway Publishing House,vividly unveils high-speed railways for the masses.At present,the significance of translating and introducing popular science books concerning high-speed railways can not be underestimated.By taking the popular science book China's High-Speed Railways as the translation object,this report selects the second and third chapter as its translation task,and explores the guiding role and application of parallel texts in the translation task,aiming at summarizing relevant translation strategies and methods for translating popular science books.Firstly,this report analyzes the content as well as style features of the original text and introduces relevant preparations before translation.Secondly,translation principles for popular science books are analyzed and application methods of parallel texts in translation are summarized based on literature review.Thirdly,this report briefs the definition and connotation of parallel texts,i.e.information resources that are closely related to the original texts.Then,relevant parallel texts from such channels as electronic dictionaries,tool books and authoritative websites are analyzed.Next,the report explores the influence of parallel texts on translation from four aspects: acquiring professional background knowledge,professional terminology,expression methods and imitating writing styles.It also demonstrates through concrete cases that parallel texts can effectively cover the shortage of professional knowledge for translators,and possess incomparable advantages in perfecting terminologies as well as expressions and learning writing styles,thereby improving the quality and efficiency of translation work.Finally,the research report summarizes some translation experience as well as skills,and also points out the limitations of this practice.In this report,it is found that:(1)Parallel texts can effectively guide the translation of popular science texts concerning high-speed railways,and haveincomparable advantages in helping translators to identify professional terms and imitate language styles and expressions.But at the same time,it should be noted that the parallel texts selected are proper and authoritative.(2)Popular science texts are scientific,vivid and easy to understand.During the process of translation,the text types should be taken into full account so as to help translators adopt appropriate translation strategies and means.(3)Full preparation before translation and strict post-processing concerning professional knowledge,terminology,idiomatic expressions and writing styles are important guarantees for translators to be competent for the translation work,which deserves great attention.(4)The use of modern translation tools and scientific & technological tools,such as electronic dictionaries and text corpus,can improve the quality and speed of translation,but the translators are the subjects of translation who need to strength the awareness of translation quality all the time.Through this translation project,this report believes that in the translation of popular science book,the translator should take into account the text types,translation purposes,parallel texts,quality control measures and other factors affecting translation quality,so as to achieve the best translation effect.By translating popular science books concerning high-speed railways,this report tries to publicize China's high-speed railways to go global in effective and interesting ways. |
