English,as a communication language,requires students to participate in classroom activities to acquire through communication.Studies have shown that the higher the level of student engagement,the better the learning effects of the student.In the English classroom,in order to mobilize students’ enthusiasm to participate in the classroom,teachers will use different types of teacher-student interaction to input language for students and stimulate students’ language output.Through effective teacher-student interaction,teachers can create a relaxed and harmonious classroom atmosphere,improve students’ enthusiasm for participating in the classroom,and cultivate students’ thinking ability and language ability.Based on the teacher-student interaction type and student participation concept proposed by the predecessors,this paper takes 213 high school students of grade 2 in M city as the research object,and uses the combination of questionnaire survey,classroom observation and interview to analyze and compare the engagement of students in the English classroom under three representative teacher-student interaction types of teacherindividual interaction,teacher-class interaction and teacher-group interaction.This paper objectively records the type of teacher-student interaction used in senior high school English class and the proportion of time spent on each type,and on this basis,a comparative study is conducted around the three dimensions of students’ behavioral engagement,cognitive engagement,and emotional engagement,aiming to explore the following two research questions:(1)What is the current situation of teacher-student interaction in senior high school English class?(2)What are the differences of students’ engagement in three different types of teacher-student interaction?The main findings of this study are summarized as follows:(1)The current situation of teacher-student interaction can be summarized that teacher-individual interaction and teacher-class interaction are frequently used by teachers,while teacher-group interaction is seldom used by teachers.(2)In teacher-individual interaction,students’ behavioral engagement is relatively good,while cognitive and emotional engagement need to be improved.Attention is well focused,and high-level strategies are often used,and occasionally low-level strategies are used.Positive emotions are not obvious and students are prone to anxiety.In the teacher-group interaction,the students’ behavior,cognitive and emotional engagement are relatively good,of which emotional engagement is the best.Students’ behavioral engagement is only second to their performance in teacher-individual interactions,with the best performance in consulting others.High-level strategies are often used and low-level strategies are rarely used by students.They show strong interest and are not prone to anxiety and tiredness.In the teacher-class interaction,students’ behavioral,cognitive and emotional engagement are not very active.Students are able to connect with the reality of life,and their performance in understanding by themselves and reflecting is the least ideal.Students are more dependent on their teachers.It is easy to feel a sense of success,but they often feel tired.Based on the research findings,this paper puts forward the following suggestions for improving the enthusiasm of high school students to participate in English classroom interaction:(1)Teachers should choose the appropriate type of teacher-student interaction based on the actual needs of students and try to diversify the types of teacher-student interaction in English class.(2)In teacher-individual interaction,teachers should encourage students as much as possible and give students positive feedback,showing expectations of students.(3)In teacher-group interaction,teachers should raise questions that are valuable for discussion and make reasonable evaluations of the results of group discussions.(4)In teacher-class interaction,teachers should reasonably design classroom activities,helping students to acquire knowledge through exploration.(5)Teachers should establish a good relationship with students and create a relaxed classroom atmosphere. |
