The platform for English education in China is mainly focused on the classroom,where the teacher’s acceptance and the students’ participation is one of the most important factors affecting the quality of teaching.In the context of the new curriculum standards and reforms,teachers have to change from being the ‘soloist’ to the ‘accompanist’ in the classroom,so good teacher-student interaction is important and necessary.What is the current situation of teacher-student interaction in the high school English classroom under the pressure of the entrance examination? What are the influencing factors? Both of these questions will be explored in this study.This study endeavours to conduct classroom observations using the COLT scale to observe the current state of teacher-student interaction in different classes and to transform the observation scale into measurable data for analysis according to the needs of the study.This was supplemented by an interview method to collect the results of the teachers’ as well as the students’ interviews to further enrich the results of the classroom observations.The results of the data analysis showed that the current situation of teacher-student interaction in the actual high school English classroom was usually characterised by the following two features.In terms of task interaction,there was a single form of teacher-student interaction,the amount of teacher-student interaction was small,and students usually did not reflect the subjectivity well,but the teacher used more teaching materials during the interaction.In terms of language interaction,the quality of teacher-student interaction is high because the teacher teaches in full English as much as possible and the feedback from the teacher is timely,extended and comprehensive.Factors affecting teacher-student interaction are usually the amount of time pressure on the teacher,the size of the classroom task,the ability of the teacher to create new forms of interaction,the maturity of the teacher’s experience,the interest of the material,and the ability and mood of the students.Excluding objective factors such as lesson time and classroom tasks,in order to better promote student-teacher interaction in the English classroom,teachers should promote the use of information technology as much as possible to optimise the form of student-teacher interaction.At the same time,teachers should carefully select teaching materials to stimulate students’ interest.And experienced teachers should give more guide to the new teachers.The new should bring more fresh ideas to promote the mutual develepment.Finally,teachers should help students to relax.
