A Study On Teacher-Student Interaction In Senior High School English Class

With the reform of English education,English classroom teaching in high school is supposed to create more opportunities for students to be active language learners.Therefore,teachers' interaction with students takes on an especially significant role in English classroom.However,during teaching practices in a high school,the author found that T-S interaction in the English classroom was still not satisfactory.So the author made a research on T-S interaction in Wuhan Foreign Languages School during the period of teaching practice there.The research intends to investigate the actual situation of T-S interaction in high school English classroom,to figure out the existing problems and to explore the factors that affect T-S interaction as well as to seek specific strategies and suggestions for the interaction between teacher and students in English classroom.The author chose five teachers and classes from Senior Grade one as research samples.Data collection was mainly from classroom observation,questionnaires and interviews with teachers.After nearly a one-month research,the author found the problems of T-S interaction of English classroom in Wuhan Foreign Languages School and gave some suggestions.First,the teacher and students take opposite attitudes towards T-S interaction in English classroom.The English teachers consider interaction with students as an,important part of English teaching.However,students are not willing to interact with teachers for different reasons.Second,it's obvious that the teacher still plays a main role in interactive process while students just accept what the teacher gives them.This kind of interaction is not a real one for conducive teacher-student relationship,but it is just knowledge giver and taker.So the main problem is the problems of teacher-student relationship,and both teacher's and students' roles should be changed to some degree.Last,the factors that affect T-S interaction,conceptually,can be generalized into three great categories.The first category can be defined from the perspective of teachers,which consist of teacher personality,error correction and feedback and teacher's questions.The second category concerns learning situation which includes issues about teacher-learner relationship and teaching content.The third category concerns learner internal factors,mostly,affective issues,that is,attitudes and motivation,and learner's personality.Among the above factors,teacher-student relationship,learner personality,teacher personality,learning attitudes and motivation are the top influential factors of T-S interaction in English classroom from the students' view.Also,from the teacher's perspective,although they hold different views on different factors,there is a unanimous agreement that the seven factors all are indispensable parts in influencing their interaction with students.
