In order to refute the biased concept of understanding Marxism as economic determinism,Engels put forward the theory of historical resultant in his later years. The theory of historical resultant emphasizes that the production and reproduction of material life only play a decisive role in social life in the sense of "ultimately".This decisive role should be understood as premise, restriction and boundary. Each link of superstructure has its relatively independent development process as well as important influence and restriction on the foundation. The final outcome of the historical process is often reflected in the resultant of individual will or the maximum average. The formation of the resultant is always restricted by the internal law.In capitalist society, the state described by the theory of historical resultant is essentially the comprehensive materialized state of capitalism.Marx’s manuscript on Capital expounds the basic principles of historical materialism, including the theory of historical resultant.Among them, the discussion of the categories of productivity and production relations is carried out in the overall process of social production and reproduction, and its internal structure itself presents a trend of complexity.Marx discussed in detail the interaction between foundation and superstructure, especially the important role played by the relationship between state and law in the process of the occurrence and development of capitalism, but Marx always insisted on the priority of foundation.Marx clearly stated that in the historical development of capitalism, due to the establishment of the rule of things over people, personal will often cannot be realized, and the final result is often the maximum average of multiple factors and multiple wills.Through the comparison between Marx and Engels, this paper proves that Marx really has a relatively complete theory of historical resultant. This study proves the fundamental consistency of Marx and Engels from one side. The text comparison shows that the main difference between Marx and Engels in the field of the theory of historical resultant is that Engels is not clear about the historical inheritance factors which constitute the premise of the theory of historical resultant, there is no explanation for the phenomenon of historical resultant, and Marxism never drew an analogy between the conflict of individual wills and the Parallelogram of Newton’s mechanics. In the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics, economic growth cannot replace everything and solve all problems. As the transition from the realistic capitalist society to the future communist society, the socialist society should always adhere to the fundamental position of people-oriented,create conditions for people’s all-round development and rely on the people to create great historical achievements.
