Abstract/Summary:
Assam of India has many tribes and races, and is one of the states with the most complicated tribal and ethnic problems.Northeast India connects South and Southeast Asia, and its unique geographical location and abundant natural resources have attracted immigrants from surrounding areas. The migration in Assam can be roughly divided into four periods: pre-colonial period,British colonial period,India-Pakistan Partition-Bangladesh Independence period, and 1971 to the present.Among them, the biggest impact on the people of Assam is the illegal immigration after 1971.In recent decades,large-scale riots and ethnic conflicts in Assam have been closely linked to illegal immigration. There are three main reasons for the existence of foreign immigrants: politically, both the Indian and Bangladeshi governments believe that illegal immigrants are the responsibility of the other side, the political parties in Assam regard foreign immigrants as a tool for seeking political interests, and the corruption of government staff in Assam; In terms of economy, poverty and land conflict in Bangladesh are the main driving forces, while Assam’s relatively large economic opportunities are the pulling forces.Geographically, the complex terrain facilitates the crossing, while cross-border ethnic connections facilitate migration. The influence of long-term influx of foreign immigrants on Assam is mainly manifested in four aspects: first,it changes the population structure of Assam; The second is the impact on the local economy.Immigrants have impacted the local labor market, and the economic development is slow due to the turmoil in the state.Third,it has an impact on local politics. The inclusion of immigrants in the voter list has aroused strong dissatisfaction among Assamese, but at the same time promoted the development of local political parties.Fourth,it has an impact on local security.Immigrants have promoted the emergence and growth of secessionist organizations in Assam, such as the United Liberation Front of Assam, which has seriously threatened local security. In response, the Indian government has taken measures such as deportation, building a barrier net and strengthening border guards, but all of them have had little effect.Immigration involves two countries,India and Bangladesh, and cooperation is needed to effectively solve the problem.
