The issue of multiple identities of international actors is one of the key points in the theoretical research of international relations. The relational identity theory breaks through the materialized structure view of the western mainstream international relations theory, reconstructs the concept of identity, and emphasizes the significance of relational network to identity production. The evolution of relational network will lead to the phenomenon of identity evolution of actors, which makes actors have multiple identities. When the actor is faced with multiple role conflicts, the actor’s emotional experience and expected income in the relationship process are the core variables that determine the actor’s choice of role adjustment strategy.ASEAN is also facing the crisis of multiple identity roles in the process of integration.During the Cold War,the "small circle of relations" formed between ASEAN member states and foreign powers, the differences in the level of development and the attribute of "close but not close" relations among ASEAN members jointly shaped the ASEAN way and community identity. In turn, the post-Cold War ASEAN+ and external dependency relationship structure and the equal and pragmatic partnership attributes have shaped ASEAN’s "relational leadership" and "central identity".The inherent logical tension between the two identities of ASEAN has led to the dilemma of ASEAN’s role in extraterritorial cooperation-integration issues and human rights-sovereignty issues. In the humanitarian crisis,Myanmar crisis, and the Energy Governance,ASEAN successfully resolved its role crisis by adopting three strategies: role compromise, role weakening, and role adaptation, which were influenced by expected benefits and emotional experiences, respectively.Understanding the relational nature of actors’ identities and the internal logic of ASEAN’s identity can help deepen China-ASEAN relations and strengthen the construction of "China-ASEAN Community of Destiny".
