The paper chose economic and social background, social policy and social work asthe perspectives to observe the development of school social work in Hong Kong. Theauthor tried to analyze the factors affecting the development of the school social work inHong Kong and to conclude its experience which may be useful to the development ofschool social work in China’s mainland.The paper consisted of three parts. The first part was the first chapter. The secondpart contained the second, third, forth and fifth chapters. And the last part contained thesixth, the seventh and the eighth chapters. The first part discussed the reason and themeaning of the topic, as well as making a brief summary on the study of school socialwork in Hong Kong from home and abroad.The second part divided the development of the school social work in Hong Konginto four periods according to its changes. The first period is from1965to1978, duringwhich, the social workers in Hong Kong realized the importance of school social workservice and tried their best to persuade the Hong Kong government to support theservice; the second period is from1979to1990, during which, the Hong Konggovernment admitted the function of the school social work service and began to carryit out in Hong Kong; the third period is from1991to1997, during which, the HongKong government gradually improved the school social work system and tried tocombine it with other children and youth services; the fourth period is after1997, duringwhich, the Hong Kong government began to offer the school social work service in“comprehensive model” in order to save resources.The last part analyzed the factors influencing the development of school socialwork in Hong Kong, concluded its experiences and put forward some useful suggestions.The most important conclusion was that both economic and social background andsocial work influenced the school social work in Hong Kong, but it was the governmentthat was playing the dominant role during its development.
