As a positive psychological quality,student engagement reflects the state and quality of students in the learning process,and its influence on students’ academic achievement is much higher than the length of study time.Among the many influencing factors of student engagement,the rising incidence of self-harm and suicide implies the loss of self-worth and the lack of meaning in life,which has attracted great attention from parents,schools and society.721 junior high school students from two school in Panyu District of Guangzhou were investigated by means of questionnaire survey,the Meaning in Life Questionnaire(MLQ),Utrecht Work Engagement Scale-Student(UWES-S),Learning motivation scales and Future Time Perspective Inventory for Adolescents(FTPI-A)were used as research tools.On one hand,this study explores the influencing mechanism of meaning in life on student engagement,and further studies the mediated role of learning motivation and the moderated role of future time perspective.On the other hand,according to the results of the survey,learning motivation intervention is targeted design to improve student engagement through the implementation of group counseling.The conclusions of this study are as follows :(1)The degree of student engagement of junior high school students is in the upper middle level as a whole.On parts of demographic variables,there are significant differences in student engagement and its dimensions.(2)The dimensions of meaning in life are positively correlated with the dimensions of student engagement.(3)The dimensions of motivation mediate the relationship between the dimensions of meaning in life and student engagement.Compared with extrinsic motivation,intrinsic motivation plays a more significant role as a mediator between meaning in life and student engagement.(4)The mediated effect of learning motivation is moderated by future time persperctive.Future-positive significantly moderate the indirect path through learning motivation to student engagement.The indirect path through meaning in life tolearning motivation is moderated by future-confusion,and the indirect path through learning motivation to student engagement is moderated by future-confusion too.(5)Interventions based on the Goal-Setting Theory,Self-Determination Theory and so on can effectively improve the level of intrinsic motivation and student engagement of junior high school students,which reaches the desired effect.
