| Reading plays an important role in children’s daily lives and learning.It can help children acquire knowledge and promote the development of their intelligence,so as to improve their ability to adapt to lives and society.It’s helpful to train reading skills for typically developing children and children with intellectual disabilities,which may contribute to the development of their reading abilities.The development of reading ability of children with intellectual disabilities is delayed,so it is very necessary to train their reading skills.According to the literature,the simultaneous and successive processing in PASS model theory have been proved by a large number of studies to significantly predict children’s abilities of word-decoding and reading comprehension ability.Children with moderate intellectual disabilities can also learn some basic reading skills through reading training.And reading efficiency is an important basis for measuring the abilities of reading,which can effectively reflect an individual’s reading skill level.It contains reading speed and the rate of reading comprehension.Therefore,based on the PASS model theory,this study aims to carry out reading skills training for children with moderate intellectual disabilities by usingthe simultaneous and successive processing strategies.By examining the changes in reading speed and the rate of reading comprehension and obtaining the change of children’ reading efficiency during the training,the effectiveness of reading skills training was verified based on simultaneous and successive processing to improve the reading efficiency of children with moderate intellectual disabilities.This research adopted the cross-subject multi-baseline design of a single-subject study.Three children with moderate intellectual disabilities in a special school were selected to receive reading skills trainings based on simultaneous-chronological processing.Each of the subjects received 24 times of training,and each training lasted about 30 minutes,which amounted to 72 times.During the process of training,Chinese short essays suitable for three children with moderate intellectual disabilities were selected Chinese short essays suitable for three moderately retarded children as reading materials for training and examining,including 24 training materials and 30 examining materials.And the self-made inspection table of reading efficiency for children with moderate intellectual disabilities was used to collect the data of three children’s reading efficiency during baseline period,interventional period and maintenance period.The collection of data respectively included 20 times,24 times and 28 times.Finally,in order to verify the effectiveness of the training,the researcher analyzed the data by using visual analysis and C statistics.The results show:(1)the reading skill training based on simultaneous and successive processing has immediate effect on improving reading efficiency of children with moderate intellectual disabilities;(2)the reading skill training based on simultaneous and successive processing has good maintenance effect on improving reading efficiency of children with moderate intellectual disabilities;(3)Specifically,the reading skill training based on simultaneous and successive processing can effectively improve reading speed and reading comprehension rate of children with moderate intellectual disabilities,and maintain good results.Based on the results,it was suggested that during the reading training,reading materials close to the daily life of children with mental retardation should be selected;children with intellectual disabilities should be reminded to use simultaneous and successive processing strategy;they should be guided to apply the acquired reading skills in daily reading,which will contribute to the development of their reading ability. |
