With the development of information technology,multimedia learning has become a convenient and effective way of learning.However,the effect of multimedia learning is often not satisfying.With the emerging research in the field,more and more scholars are aware of the research should not be limited in the cognitive level but also needs considerations on the effects from learners’ emotions.Based on this,emotional design in multimedia learning has become a research hotspot,but the researchers reach different conclusions.Therefore,this study summarizes the relevant literatures and theories on the subject of emotional design.Under the guidance of Cognitive-Affective Theory of Learning with Media,the Integrated Model of Multimedia Interactivity,etc.,this study constructs a model of emotional design in multimedia learning and carries out three experiments to study the influence of emotional design at the visual level,visual-aural level and visual-aural-behavioral level in multimedia learning.In order to evaluate the effectiveness of emotional design,a questionnaire survey is conducted to examine the learners’ emotions,learning motivations,cognitive load,and learning outcomes.The main conclusions are as follows:(1)In terms of learners’ positive emotions,visual design,aural design,visual-aural design,and visual-aural-behavioral design all enable learners to experience higher level of positive emotions,and it shows a positive relation with the emotional design elements.(2)In terms of learner’s learning motivation,visual design,aural-visual design and visual-aural-behavioral design can all improve learners’ learning motivation,with a positive relationship with the emotional design elements.(3)In terms of cognitive load,with the existence of visual design,perceived difficulty of the learning task will be decreased to lower overall cognitive load no matter the aural design is present or not.(4)In terms of learning outcomes,the aural design enhances the learning and memorizing abilities of the learners.However,the additional behavioral design upon the visual-aural design will decrease the learning and memorizing abilities of the learners.This study enriches the theories and conclusions of emotional design in multimedia learning with experimental evidence.In conclude,a suitable emotional design should be based on the requirements of teaching,like to enable learners to have a better learning experience or have better learning outcomes and providing constructive suggestions for the development of multimedia learning in the future.
