China is in a period of economic transformation,and science has become a key factor driving economic development.Scientific development has further increased the requirements for talents,especially higher requirements for human scientific inquiry capabilities.This is not only determined by the inherent characteristics of scientific activities,which is also a reflection of the important characteristics of innovative talents in the future.Therefore,it is urgent to cultivate students’ scientific inquiry ability.In 2017,the Ministry of Education issued the Standards for Science Curriculum in Compulsory Education Primary Schools.It strongly promotes inquiry-based learning methods,attaches importance to the cultivation of students’ scientific inquiry capabilities,and recommends teachers to introduce the STEM concept in teaching practice.The concept represents a new international trend of education,emphasizing the integration of knowledge in four disciplines of science,technology,engineering,and mathematics to form a view of a comprehensive curriculum,which aims to enable students to solve authentic problems in real life and cultivate them.Students’ interdisciplinary problem-solving ability,inquiry ability,critical thinking ability,etc.In view of this,by using questionnaires and interviews as the main research method,this study attempts to combine the concept of STEM education with the scientific inquiry activities of elementary schools in China,integrate theoretical research,methodological research and practical research in it,and comb the relevant literature of STEM education and scientific inquiry capabilities in details,the teachers and students of Wuhan C primary school,Y primary school,and S primary school were investigated.The in-depth research on the current status of the inquiry ability of primary school students in China was conducted.By participating in the scientific inquiry practice activities of STEM concept in the sample schools,further exploration is conducted.At the present stage,the problems existing in scientific inquiry activities and their causes are analyzed.On this basis,corresponding training strategies are proposed.Based on the above research,it is found that there are two main problems in the inquiry ability of primary school students in China at present:1.The security system is inadequate,mainly manifested in the need to improve the level of teachers,the evaluation system is incomplete,and the strength of social support needs to be strengthened;2.The scientific inquiry process is formal,mainly manifested in the insufficient training of scientific attitudes and problems Situation and life are not closely connected,the use of guidance methods is more casual,and there are fewer opportunities for expression and communication.In order to analyze these problems as well as improve the inquiry ability of primary school students,the author tries to put forward some corresponding strategies: First,to improve the support system of scientific inquiry.It is necessary to s train science teachers and develop high-quality courses to meet the needs of students sytematically;to further improve the evaluation system and create a diversified pattern of evaluation;Second,actively to encourage all parties in society to participate in science education and build a good education ecology;and to optimize the scientific inquiry process.To further strengthen discipline integration and cultivate students’ good scientific attitude;to learn to create inquiry situations and vigorously consolidate the foundation of inquiry;to use reasonable methods to stimulate students’ enthusiasm for inquiry;to encourage students to express results and share inquiry experience.In short,the author tried to summarize the ideas and methods of cultivating the scientific inquiry ability of primary school students through research,and enriched the connotation of scientific inquiry ability research in China.The development of China’s science education and teaching level promotes the improvement of primary school students’ scientific literacy.
