The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of parental rejection on depression in junior high school students and the mechanism of rejection sensitivity and cognitive reappraisal. In this study, parents’ rejection, rejection sensitivity, cognitive reappraisal and depression were measured by using the "rejection" sub-questionnaire of the simplified parenting style questionnaire, the simplified Version of the Child and Adolescent Depression Scale, the children’s rejection sensitivity questionnaire and the "cognitive reappraisal" sub-questionnaire of the emotion regulation questionnaire.Through random sampling,a questionnaire survey was conducted on 439 junior high school students in Shanxi Province and Heilongjiang Province, and the results showed that:(1)The difference test of parental rejection showed that the rural students perceived more parental rejection than the urban students;Non-only child perceive more parental rejection than only-child do.(2)The difference test of rejection sensitivity showed that the rejection sensitivity of rural students was higher than that of urban students;Non-only child are more sensitive to rejection than only-child.In addition, after controlling for parental rejection, place of origin and only child status, female rejection sensitivity was higher than male rejection sensitivity.(3)There are significant gender differences in cognitive reappraisal.Males are significantly more likely to use cognitive reappraisal as an emotion regulation strategy than females.(4)The difference test of depression showed that the degree of depression in females was significantly higher than that in males; The degree of depression in rural students was significantly higher than that in urban students. The depression level of non-only child was significantly higher than that of only child.(5)Parental rejection, rejection sensitivity and depression were positively correlated with each other;Cognitive reappraisal was significantly negatively correlated with depression.(6)Rejection sensitivity plays a partial mediating role in the influence of parental rejection on depression. The more parental rejection the individual perceived, the higher the rejection sensitivity, and thus the higher the degree of depression.(7)Cognitive reappraisal moderated the direct prediction of depression by parental rejection. With the increase of individual cognitive reappraisal, the predictive effect of parental rejection on depression decreased.
