Critical thinking skills have become the core skills of talents in the 21 st century. The development of the information age has put forward new challenges to the requirements of talents. In the face of complex information and resources, people need to correctly analyze, evaluate and infer. Therefore, critical thinking ability appear particularly important. At the same time,as the core of creativity, how to effectively cultivate critical thinking ability has always been a hot topic. The research and discussion by researchers include what curriculum mode and teaching mode should be adopted for critical thinking cultivation. Some studies have pointed out that creating a problem-solving environment, giving students a more open learning space, and encouraging students to fully engage in collaborative communication and discussion are effective ways to promote critical thinking. Therefore, based on the relevant research background and theories, this paper designs collaborative roles and carries out teaching practice in the context of problem solving.By combing the relevant literature on role design and critical thinking cultivating, this paper extracts four role types, namely initiator, demonstrator, questioner, and summarizer,to explore the influence of the teaching mode based on collaborative role design on the cultivation of students’ critical thinking. In the specific teaching mode and activity design, combined with the critical thinking cultivating process mode, according to the three-stage problem solving process of problem discovery-exploration analysis-problem solving, and through the design of relevant learning scaffolds for collaborative learning activities, timely guidance and monitoring are carried out.Through the collection of critical thinking ability questionnaires, learning task sheets, reflective logs and student interviews, this study reaches the following main conclusions: First, the teaching model based on collaborative role design can help students improve their critical thinking ability, and with the deepening of problemsolving activities, students’ reflective thinking gradually develops to a higher level.Second, the interview results also show that role assignment has a certain positive effect on students’ clear responsibilities in collaborative learning activities and improve the efficiency of collaborative learning.Through effective collaborative learning activities to solve problems, students’ critical thinking has been developed to a certain extent. Finally, the research in this paper still needs to be improved and perfected in terms of sample range and teaching duration extension, and it is necessary to optimize the teaching mode through multiple rounds of teaching practice.
