The book entitled "Zhong Guo Jian Zhu Shi"(History of Chinese Architecture)published in 1933 and its predecessor "Zhong Guo Jian Zhu Xue Jiang Yi"(The Handouts of Chinese Architecture)are a expression of Yue Jiazao's Chinese architecture research, which had run through his lifetime.Since his lifetime(1868-1944)was in a period that full of dramatic changes, this research presents a complex appearance inevitably, and it could be called a "multi-layered process".This article attempts to start with the final text, disassemble and analyze this "multi-layered process",and explore the process and causes of its development. The study found that, essentially, the process of Yue Jiazao's research on the history of Chinese architecture is a process of continuous recognition of the three concepts — buildings, architecture, architectural history — and a exploration of corresponding methods. And this is the biggest difference between Yue Jiazao and the later scholars represented by Liang Sicheng.Liang Sicheng and others mastered highly mature theories and research methods first, and then consciously applied these methods to the research of Chinese traditional architecture.Secondly, this process' s formation depends on two powers — one is Chinese tradition and internal power, and the other is Western and external power.Because of the two forces, there is Yue Jiazao's complex social experiences and roles firstly, and then affected his architectural history research. Therefore, both Yue Jiazao and his research present a "semi-old" appearance that is a mixture of Chinese and Western, traditional and modern. Finally, the complexity presented in the research of Yue Jiazao's architectural history reflects the process that an external discipline(architecture or architectural history)transformed and took root in China. Therefore, the case study of Yue Jiazao also has A greater meaning — may be helpful to today's research on architectural history and the history of correlative disciplines.
