With the rapid development of China’s economy and the acceleration of urbanization,the public space design of cities and towns has also been greatly improved.However,compared with the people’s growing requirement for a better life,there are still some weak links.Design and development of urban public space at the present stage appeared the phenomenon of "thousands of cities have the same appearance",history and culture are abandoned,old buildings were largely demolished and rebuilt.The layout,architectural form and spatial texture of big cities are copied in urban design,which leads to the lack of characteristics of towns.Young people go out to work,while old people,women and children are mostly left at home.Urban development lags behind and “hollowing out” occurs.Therefore,the design expansion and sustainable development of urban public space is extremely urgent.Spiritual needs is a higher level to get after meeting people’s basic needs.Only by reviving local culture,telling historical stories well and paying attention to spiritual needs,can towns strengthen local residents’ sense of identity and belonging,and build towns with regional characteristics,so as to truly achieve sustainable development of cities and towns.Therefore,it is the focus of this paper to introduce the spirit of place into the design of urban public space so as to better meet the spiritual needs of local residents and serve urban’s development.The historical block is the accumulation of the town’s historical cultures.The renewal of the historical block plays an important role in activating the town’s public space and reshaping the town’s historical cultures.The research content of this paper mainly includes the following aspects.At the beginning of the research,literature research method is used to read a large number of domestic and foreign literatures on concepts and theories related to the spirit of public space and the public place.Other than that,the research makes a comprehensive analysis of the research background,purpose and significance,research status,research methods,research content and framework,etc.The second part starts from the existing problems of urban public space and studies the needs of urban residents for public space.Based on the questions,the purpose,frequency,preference and psychological experience of urban residents’ use of space were investigated through questionnaire survey,so as to further understand residents’ demand for public space.The third part discusses the elements and methods of the application of spirit of public space in the design of urban public space.The design elements are analyzed from visual,tactile,auditory and psychological aspects.By using observation method and literature analysis method and through case study,the design methods of urban public space based on the spirit of place are summarized to lay a foundation for the subsequent design practice.The fourth part seeks for the relationship among "people,land and literature" in space design,and constructs the "PDC" urban public space design model under the guidance of spirit of public space.The fifth part applies this preliminary study in the design practice,complete the concrete scheme design of the reconstruction to town’s historical block in Bai Pu,Ru Gao.It is hoped that this way can arouse homesickness,enhance the cultural pride and happiness of local residents,and provide a powerful reference for the development of Bai Pu and numerous towns in Jiangsu and Anhui.
