A Study Of Modal Verbs In The Yushan Dialect Of Qupian In The Wu Language Department

Modal categories have always been a hot topic in academic research,modal verbs are an important means of expressing modality in modern Chinese.Based on the theoretical framework of modality in cognitive linguistics,this paper studies the modal verbs in Yushan dialect of Chuqu area in Wu dialect.The first chapter mainly introduces the phonological overview in Yushan dialect of Chuqu area in Wu dialect,retrospects the research status of modal verbs in China's dialects,explains the problems that the predecessors have not fully studied,and elaborates the theoretical framework,research methods and corpus sources in this paper.The second chapter discusses the modal verb“[(?)²²]?”which is used frequently in Yushan dialect,analyzes the semantic relevance of the modal verb“[(?)²²]?”and compares it with“Neng(?)”and“Hui(?)”in Mandarin,describes the negative and interrogative forms of“[(?)²²]?”,and discusses the difference between“[(?)²²]?”and synonymous form“[(?)²²(?)⁵]??”“V[(?)⁰]C(V?C)”“V[(?)⁰(?)⁰](V??)”.The third chapter explores the semantic source and modal meaning characteristics of the modal verb“[(?)²²]?”in Yushan dialect,and compares it with“Yao(?)”and“Dei(?)”in Mandarin,uses the method of synchronic measurement to construct the modal semantic association of“[(?)²²]?”and clarifies the polysemy of“[(?)²²]?”.The fourth chapter introduces the modal verb“[(?)²²(?)⁵]??”in Yushan dialect,discusses the meaning and category of the modality expressed by“[(?)²²(?)⁵]??”,and compares it with“Keyi(??)”in Mandarin,negative and interrogative forms of“[(?)²²(?)⁵]??”are also described under each modality category,and the modal semantic association of“[(?)²²(?)⁵]??”is constructed from the synchronic perspective.The fifth chapter mainly examines the expressions of the small modal verbs“[(?)³³]?”“[(?)⁴⁵]??”“[(?)²²(?)³³]??”in Yushan dialect,which are used less frequently and have relatively few modal meanings,the modal meanings and syntactic features of each modal verb are discussed.The sixth chapter combs several pairs of modal verbs whose internal semantics are very close in Yushan dialect,and compares the contextual and syntactic features of these pairs of near-synonymous or synonymous modal verbs,made external comparison with modal verbs which have similar semantics in Mandarin,and proposed a system table of modal verbs in Yushan dialect eventually.The seventh chapter summarizes the main viewpoints,innovations and deficiencies of this paper.
