The original text is extracted from Chapter 7 of the pragmatics book Meaning in Interaction: An Introduction to Pragmatics, which is edited by Jenny Thomas.Chapter7 “The construction of meaning” discusses the research value of pragmatics, the relationship between pragmatics and linguistics, and the relationship between pragmatics and sociolinguistics in detail. The original text is highly academic and logical, and the language is relatively formal. There are also many professional terms, and the syntactic construction and textual structure are complicated.Combining the characteristics of the text, the report concentrates on the translation of polysemous nouns, and summarizes two corresponding translation methods: contextual analysis and annotation. This report also discusses the translation of information focus and achieves the goal of stressing information focus by means of word order adjustment and change of voices.Meanwhile, the translation strategy of reference structure is also one of the focuses of this study, including ellipsis and substitution. This report can provide reference value for future translations of related texts and contribute personally to the promotion of Chinese research pragmatics.
