This paper uses the term "ellipsis" to summarize the reducible phenomenon that the essential components of structure do not appear in the sentence as ellipsis.Starting from the common ellipsis in written style, this paper puts forward three questions related to ellipsis: first, how to define ellipsis? Second,in the real context, are the characteristics of ellipsis in different styles of written language similar? Third, what are the conditions for the convergence of ellipsis in different styles of written language and what factors will affect it? Aiming at these three problems, this paper attempts to classify ellipsis in modern Chinese written language from three aspects: sentence composition, context type, clause type and position relationship, and analyzes the relationship between symmetry and asymmetry in ellipsis. Then, based on this semantic system, through the retrieval and analysis of real corpora,we try to take narrative style, operational style, thing description style, and argumentative style as examples to conduct overall data statistics and quantitative analysis of ellipsis in the four types of written styles, and get the frequency and proportion of ellipsis in each style,The concrete examples are analyzed. Finally, this paper attempts to use economic principles, accessibility theory, discourse analysis and other related theories to summarize the rules of ellipsis in modern Chinese written style,to understand the differences of ellipsis in different written languages,in order to explore the causes of ellipsis.
