Harsh parenting refers to a series of harsh, coercive and authoritarian parenting behavior adopted by parents to make sure that children will develop as expected.According to previous researches, negative parenting may induce adolescents' emotional maladjustment, but researchers have not paid much attention to the mechanism of how harsh parenting triggers adolescents' emotional maladjustment.Based on previous research, the satisfaction of basic psychological needs(the need for autonomy, relatedness and competence)is conducive to adolescents' emotional health. So would harsh parenting increase the risk of emotional maladjustment by frustrating their basic psychological needs? And what is the role of adolescents' emotional stability(adolescent neuroticism)? Based on the above consideration, the current study examined the association between harsh parenting and adolescents' emotional adaptation, including the mediating role of adolescents' basic psychological needs and the moderating role of adolescents' neuroticism by testing four mediated models and two moderated mediating models. This study contains two parts.Study 1 consists of three sub-studies: study 1a explored the mediating effects of adolescents' need for autonomy, relatedness and competence in the relationship between harsh parenting and adolescents' subjective well-being;study 1b explored the mediating effects of adolescents' need for autonomy, relatedness and competence in the relationship between harsh parenting and adolescents' hope;on the basis of study 1a and study1 b,study 1c explored the mediating effects of adolescents' basic psychological needs and the moderating role of adolescents' neuroticism in the relationship between harsh parenting and adolescents' positive emotions.Study 2 also consists of three sub-studies: study 2a explored the mediating effects of adolescents' need for autonomy, relatedness and competence in the relationship between harsh parenting and adolescents' anxiety;study 2b explored the mediating effects of adolescents' need for autonomy, relatedness and competence in the relationship between harsh parenting and adolescents' depression;on the basis of study 2a and study 2b,study 2c explored the mediating effects of adolescents' basic psychological needs and the moderating role of adolescents' neuroticism in the relationship between harsh parenting and adolescents' negative emotions. Results of this study demonstrated that:(1)Adolescents' need for relatedness and competence partially mediated the relationship between harsh parenting and adolescents' subjective well-being.Adolescents' need for autonomy and relatedness partially mediated the relationship between harsh parenting and adolescents' hope.(2)Adolescents' basic psychological needs partially mediated the relationship between harsh parenting and adolescents' positive emotions, and adolescents' neuroticism moderated the indirect pathway via adolescents' basic psychological needs.Namely, the indirect effect was exacerbated for adolescents with a high level of neuroticism.(3)Adolescents' need for relatedness and competence partially mediated the relationship between harsh parenting and adolescents' anxiety.Adolescents' need for autonomy, competence and relatedness partially mediated the relationship between harsh parenting and adolescents' depression.(4)Adolescents' basic psychological needs partially mediated the relationship between harsh parenting and adolescents' negative emotions, adolescents' neuroticism moderated the indirect pathway via adolescents' basic psychological needs,Namely, the indirect effect was exacerbated for adolescents with a high level of neuroticism. In conclusion, harsh parenting not only impairs adolescents' emotional adaptability directly, but also disrupts adolescents' emotional adaptability by frustrating their basic psychological needs, and the indirect negative effects could be moderated by adolescents' neuroticism. The results of this study have important theoretical and practical significance for improving parental negative parenting and protecting children's mental health. It warns parents that they should avoid harsh parenting which is detrimental to their children's growth, thus reducing the risk of emotional maladjustment among adolescents.
