College Students' Psychological Separation And School Adjustment: The Moderating Effects Of Parenting Style

Developmental psychologists view psychological separation as an important task in individual development. College students' psychological separation and parenting style influence school adjustment.In the present study, I investigated the relationship between psychological separation, parenting style and school adjustment. Eight hundred college students in Zhengzhou, Kaifeng, Chengdu, Guangzhou completed the Psychological Separation Inventory , Parenting Style Questionnaire and College Student Adaptability Inventory. The conclusions were as follows:(1)College students' Functional Independence, Emotional Independence, Conflictual Independence, Attitudinal Independence with father, were all higher than that with mother; Male students' Functional Independence, Emotional Independence with father, Attitudinal Independence, Emotional Independence, Functional Independence with mother, were all higher than females.(2)There's no significant gender and grade difference on the general adjustment levels. Just on Environmental General Evaluation and Study adaptation, the female students' adjustment are significantly superior to male. Freshman' environmental general evaluation levels are statistically higher that of sophomore, junior' vocational adjustment levels are significant higher freshman.(3)The relationship between psychological separation and school adjustment was significant. College students' Attitudinal Independence and Emotional Independence to parent and school adjustment had reciprocal effects whereas conflict independence to parent and school adjustment had consistent effects.(4)The relationship between school adjustment and parenting style was significant. Trust-encouragement and affection-warmed parenting style and school adjustment had consistent effect; authoritarian, indulgence and neglecting parenting style and school adjustment had reciprocal effects.(5)Psychological separation have significant influence on social anxiety beyond demographic variables.(6)Parenting style moderated the relationship between psychological separation and school adjustment.
