The Qing Dynasty lasted more than 270 years, which was an important period of Chinese calligraphy.Traditional calligraphy reached an unprecedented height by the Mid-Qing Dynasty, which lasted more than 1000 years since Jin and Tang Dynasties.Stele calligraphy had been advanced and studied since the Jiaqing period.Stele calligraphy experienced the beginning of a different path from the Traditional calligraphy, the period of friction and conflict with the Traditional calligraphy, and the period of fusion with the Traditional calligraphy in the Late Qing Dynasty. With the introduction of stele by Ruan Yuan and Bao Shichen, and promoting by Kang Youwei, the Stele calligraphy became a temporary outstanding one.In the critical period of change of Stele calligraphy and Traditional calligraphy,a group of calligraphers still sticked to the Traditional calligraphy, advocated and spread the thought of post study.Wu Dexuan was an outstanding one of this school of theory.Wu Dexuan's idea of the Traditional calligraphy, which guided by Yao Nai,was formed in the exchange and collision with Bao Shichen's thoughts on tablet learning. It mainly included learning the lingering charm from the scholars in Jin Dynasty, learning the calligraphy rules from Tang Dynasty people, putting emphasis on the calligraphy inspiration of Song Dynasty people and learning from the ancient calligraphers,as well as the aesthetic idea of neutralization. He also had his unique view on technique of using the brush pen called “Beautiful as iron, tender as gold”,and the rule of using Chinese ink called “the rule of using Chinese ink is not to let ink overflow from the brush pen,but to learn from ink overflowed from the pen”.Wu Dexuan's idea of calligraphy had a direct impact on the exploration and practice of He Shaoji,Zeng Guofan,Zhang Y uzhao and other calligraphers in the late Qing Dynasty on the compatibility of song and Han Studies, and the integration of calligraphy and stele. It played an indispensable leading role in the spread of calligraphy in the prosperous period of stele learning and the integration of Chinese calligraphy and Stele calligraphy in the late Qing Dynasty.
