The report is based on the “stele” and “rubbing” part of the Chinese-English translation project of Profound Scholars' Lectures on Calligraphy from Beijing Transplus Translation Co.,Ltd.,with a total of 10,000 words.“Stele” and “rubbing”,as the main carriers and forms of ancient calligraphy, have been very popular in each dynasty and give later generations the opportunity to know and learn ancient calligraphy. Most of the text,if written in vernacular Chinese,is easy to understand. But ancient Chinese prose is also adopted to serve as explanations and descriptions, adding elements of literature and culture as well as reproducing historical styles. The report introduces the background, value, contents, and text features of the project.Guided by the Skopos Theory of Hans Vermeer, the difficulties of translation, namely, calligraphy fonts, names of calligraphic works, figures of speech, and ancient Chinese prose are analyzed and discussed.Different translation methods including literal translation, liberal translation, annotated transliteration and amplification are adopted according to the specific features of the difficulties. In the final part, the report summarizes the experience profited from the translation activity and further efforts to be made, paving the way for the future translation work.
