Choice deferral is a kind of phenomenon that may occur when people want to avoid making decision for various reasons in daily life. The research of choice deferral is one of key components of decision avoidance behavior research. We have known that there are plenty of elements could affect choice deferral. Many studies have focused on the dynamic influence of individual differences on choice deferral in last few years. However,it is not very clear about how individual motivational orientation that accompany with individual psychological processes affect choice deferral.According to regulatory mode theory, regulatory and control of individual behavior includes two different motivational orientations, locomotion mode and assessment mode. Therefore, this study focused on exploring the influence of regulatory mode on choice deferral, and the intermediate process of it by tracking decision process. In addition, from the perspective of the interaction between traits and situations,we explored whether the influence of regulatory mode on choice deferral would be adjusted by the situational factor decision makers' roles. This study contained three scenario experiments.Experiment 1,there were two sub-experiments that investigated the influence of the regulatory mode on choice deferral by measuring regulatory mode and manipulating regulatory mode respectively.Experiment 2,the information display board was used to presented decision task.In order to investigate whether information processing modes(searching time, searching depth, searching mode)mediated the effect of regulatory mode on choice deferral.Experiment 3,we manipulated the decision makers' roles which is a decision situation variable,in order to find the dynamic effect of decision makers' roles and regulatory mode on choice deferral. This study drawn the following conclusions.First, individuals with different regulatory modes have different intention to defer choice.Compared to locomotion mode group, assessment mode group had a higher intention to defer choice.Second, the information processing mode(searching time)play partial mediating roles between regulatory mode and choice deferral.Third, the results of experiment 3demonstrated that the decision makers' roles could moderated the main effect and the indirect effect of regulatory mode on choice deferral. When making decisions for themselves, the assessment mode group is more likely to defer choice than locomotion mode group. While, when individuals making decisions for others, there is no difference had been found.Individuals are more inclined to defer choice no matter what regulatory mode they were.Fourth, decision makers' roles moderated the first stage of the mediation path. The interaction of decision makers' roles and regulatory mode significantly affected individuals' information searching time, and further affected individuals' intention to defer choice. This study verified that regulatory mode is an important antecedent variable of choice deferral, which enriched the research on choice deferral.Meanwhile, the study demonstrated how regulatory mode and decision makers' roles affected choice deferral on the grounds of decision-making process. The result shown that information processing mode(searching time)is a mediator of it.And the differences of choice deferral and information processing modes of individuals with different regulatory modes will change in different decision-makers' roles. It could provide reference for how individuals with different regulatory modes improve their decision-making efficiency.
