"Men's Parenting Women's Parenting" (excerpt) Translation Practice Report

This time,the translator selected Chapter 5“what kind of‘parenting' expectations does a wife have for her husband?” and Chapter 6 "the parental pressure of a father" of the book “Male Parenting and Female Parenting” edited by Leko Yamato,Setruko Onode and Nachiko Kiwaki for translation practice text.This part elaborates how the wife wishes the husband to participate in the child-raising and what kind of pressure the father feels to the child-raising,which is the important content of studying the family parenting.“Male Parenting and Female Parenting”is a typical academic text with the characteristics of accuracy and objectivity,which requires the translator to be loyal to the original text and the author;meanwhile,the academic text focuses on the study of social facts and the transmission of text information,in translation,the translator should also consider the readers' reading experience and acceptance as far as possible.Christiane Nord's “Function plus Loyalty” translation theory not only requires the translation to conform to the target language,but also requires the translator to properly handle the interpersonal relationship among the author,the reader and the translator,which is of guiding significance to this translation practice.Therefore,the translator chooses Nord's “Function plus Loyalty” translation theory to guide the translation practice.The structure of this translation practice report is as follows.First,the translator introduces the translation practice text,discusses the purpose and significance of translation,and then describes the process of translation practice.Guided by the“Function plus Loyalty” translation theory,from the perspective of the translator,through literal translation,free translation and other translation strategies,the translator is loyal to the author,the reader and coordinates the author and the reader to achieve loyalty to the translator himself.Finally,the translator summarizes the translation practice.It is hoped that this translation practice report can provide reference for the future translation studies of sociological texts and the practical application of Nord's“Function plus Loyalty” translation theory.
