Harmony Study Of Britten's Piano Concerto

Edward Benjamin Britten(1913-1976)was one of the most excellent English composers,conductors and pianists in the 20 th century.At the the beginning of the 20 th century,the development of music presented a situation of "a hundred flowers blossom".Under the music background of the integration and collision of tradition and modernity,Britten took tradition as his music creation cornerstone,and then closely integrated modern harmony techniques with it,reflecting his superb harmony technology."the Piano concerto"(Piano Concert,OP.13)was selected as the research object in this paper,which was considered to be one of the most influential instrumental music works,and also Brittens’ only writing work in his early time.The major objectives were to analyze the core of the curved motive,chord material,and specific harmony techniques through different thinking modes,to summarize the composer personalized harmony thinking,and more importantly,to further explore the Britten’s early creation idea and his music language.This paper consisted of three parts: introduction,main body and conclusion.Introduction included objectives,research status and its significance.The body was divided into four chapters.The first chapter briefly introduced Britten’slife and his creative career.Furthermore,the creative background of Piano Concerto and its musical form structure of each movement were elaborated.The second chapter mainly stated the exposition of core motivation,analyzed the exposition motivation and development of the first movement,studied the structural force effect of core motivation for the four movements.The third chapter analyzed various chords with large seven degrees in the works from the aspect of chord structure.Following this,Chapter four analyzed the rich mode thinking in the works from the perspective of mode.Conclusion combined with the main body extracted the characteristics of the techniques analyzed in the text,and summarized Britten’s personalized harmony thinking.
