The translation report is based on the translation practice,the biographical literature work First: Sandra Day O'Connor(excerpts)published in 2019.The work First: Sandra Day O'Connor narrates the life of the first female justice of Supreme Court of America.The selected chapter records her real stories in the court,including the background,the tendency and the result of those cases in Supreme Court.As a biographical literature work,the work focuses on portraying characters with vivid language,which features on its literariness and historicity nature.The focus and difficulty of this translation practice lie in the way to represent the literariness and historicity nature of the source text so as to get an acceptable and readable translation for target readers.The source text mainly introduces the story of Justice O'Connor from the tone of the narrator,with detailed description of the utterances and actions of these characters,showing the features of these characters.The Hermeneutic Translation Theory put forward by George Steiner is helpful for the translator to illustrate the source text in different stage of translation process with proper translation techniques and skills so that the text features can be represented.Therefore,under the guidance of Hermeneutic Translation Theory,the translator analyzes the differences between English and Chinese and adopts translation skills such as omission,conversion,inversion,division and annotation to achieve the literariness and historicity nature of the source text.This translation report consists of four chapters,including task description,translation process,case analysis and conclusion.This translation report shows that the Fourfold Motions of Hermeneutic Translation Theory,namely “trust”,“aggression”,incorporation”,and “compensation” are applicable to the translation of biographical literature work and would give some enlightenments to the translator's illustration to the source text and translation skills adopted.
