"Nature" is an important theoretical concept in western literary and artistic thought, which is the foundation and source of writers' creation. Therefore,to explore the meaning of "nature" in Zola's literary and artistic thought becomes the logical source of studying Zola's naturalistic literary theory.Based on "Nature",this dissertation combs the evolution of the western view of nature and analyzes the influence of Zola's view of nature on his literary thoughts.Through a comparative study with the view of nature in different periods,it can be found that in Zola's literary thought,"nature" not only refers to the external objective world, but also leads to the inner spiritual world of man,it affects the way writers think and write. Therefore,Zola takes the truth as the basic principle and puts forward his unique personal views on the essence, creation and function of literature and art.In his exploration of the essence of literature and art,he put forward the theory of "manifestation" in the light of the realistic theory of "representation",and in his literary and artistic creation,he examined literature with a scientific attitude,in the function of literature and art,he used the concept of naturalism to break through the previous understanding of the theory of "Human Studies" and widen the boundary of literature to human expression,it laid a foundation for the later formation of modernism literary theory. Therefore,by sorting out the influence of the evolution of the outlook on nature on literary theory as a whole,we can find out the uniqueness and foresight of Zola's literary and artistic thought, and probe into the influence and inspiration of his literary and artistic thought to later generations, this dissertation focuses on the study of Zola's literary theory around "nature".
