Tombs are the important object of archaeological research. This paper refers to the latest research on tombs in pre-Qin period in China in recent years, and conducts a preliminary study on the use of jade for tombs in southern Jin from the perspective of grading and gender. The scope of the study involved the burial of tombs with jade in southern Shanxi from the late New Period to the Eastern Zhou Dynasty. The article is divided into six chapters. The introduction expounds the research objects and methods of this paper, and reviews the current research on jade used in tombs in the pre-Qin period in China.Chapters 1 to 3 sort out archaeological materials in three parts: the Longshan Period, the Xia Shang to the Western Zhou, and the Eastern Zhou. The fourth chapter is based on the first three chapters to analyze the jade used in the tombs of southern Jin throughout the pre-Qin period. The conclusion is a summary of the preliminary conclusions and shortcomings of this article. This paper argues that the real tradition of tomb-used jade in the southern Jin Dynasty began in the Western Zhou Dynasty, and as it entered the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, the jade system evolved from top to bottom, narrowing from the differences between different genders within the same rank, and the result was that the difference between men and women within the same rank was far less than the difference between the ranks. Therefore, this paper concludes that the use of jade for tombs in the southern Jin region is the result of the evolution of the local aristocratic hierarchy.
