Under the background of the space turn nowadays, the relationship between human and space is elevated to an important position.According to the space theory, especially the research status of the close relationship between theory and literature of the "Third Space",the focus is shifted to the literature level and found that the current research results involving the combination of “third space” theory and film space are fewer.Combined this with the craze of science fiction films, the research scope is set to people, cities, the future and movies.Science fiction movies talk about the future of people, while the future of people is also the future of cities. Therefore, the research object is set to the future cities in science fiction movies. In the introduction part, the third space and the film space are determined as objects of the study. The former is a space concept proposed by Edward Soja, which is a reinterpretation of space issues from the perspective of postmodernism. The latter combines Deleuze's definition of the film space with Lefebvre's spatial discourse. These determine that this paper intends to study the film space that serves as a visual presentation and conveys aesthetic implications as a dynamic cultural symbol and cultural practice,so as to realize the purpose of reconstructing film space and discourse of film space. Then, this paper sorts out the research results of science fiction film space from two perspectives, one being the science fiction film space while the another one being the relationship between science fiction literature and urban space, and obtain a research path that can be used for reference. In the main body part, this paper adopts the approach of “first dividing then general” approach, first explains the future cities image in European and American science fiction movies and the theoretical development process of the "third space" from two dimensions, and then combines the two to explore the essence and characteristics of the future cities as the "third space".The first chapter introduces conceptual metaphors in the process of classifying and sorting out the images of future cities in European and American science fiction films to promote the birth of the symbol of future cities. The symbol of cities uses their unique perspective to show people's attention to the subjective discourse of space.Architectural symbols, machine symbols, residents symbols and crisis symbols frame the entire future city with their unique characteristics.By analyzing the representative entity concepts in different symbols, this paper explores different types of entity concepts and their corresponding metaphors from different perspectives such as formal structure, presentation approach and the relationship with film elements such as plot,so as to present the image of the future cities, and then summarize the spatial characteristics of the symbolic metaphor in future cities. The second chapter explores the content related to urban space and film space in the process of evolution of the "third space" theory and finds the theoretical foundations for film analysis. As a theory, the "third space sorts out the research results according to the historical development context and representatives. The first stage was the foundation of the"Third Space" theory in the 1970 s and 1980 s,with the representative figures Henri Lefebvre and Michel Foucault. The second stage is in the 1990 s,with Edward W.Soja presenting the formation and practice of the "third space" theory. The academic research results mainly include the translation and introduction results of the three-person works and the research results explaining the most core viewpoints in the three-person space theory: Lefebvre's "Space Ternary Dialectics"and Foucault's "Heterogeneous Space" theory and Soja's "Third Space" and Urban Space Thoughts. Then begins to combine the theory of "the Third Space" with the film space.According to Soja dialectics of "Society-Space-History",the essence of the future cities as the third space is summarized as the historical city, which is the product of the interaction between space and history and the hegemonic city, which is the product of the interaction between space and society. The former carries the European and American cultural memories and aesthetic characteristics, while the latter is the carrier of the new social relations after social production and reproduction. The third chapter defines the future cities in science fiction films as an imaginary space that transcends reality.According to Edward Soja's analysis of the postmodern metropolis, three dynamic characteristics are explained separately, including the deviation and remodeling of the spatial main body, the dissolution and bridging of boundaries and the division and collision of heterotopias.By combining the space aesthetics in science fiction films with the "Third Space" theory,it highlights the status quo of people's continuous establishment of subjectivity in the space, together with the relationship between space and humans. These gilled the gaps in future urban research to some extent and have also excavated new ideas for analyzing films as a cultural aesthetic space.
