Song Jue,as a pioneer in the history of learning inscriptions of Han Dynasty, made significant achievements in the creation of official script. He was highly regarded by the scholars when he was alive. His works were widely circulated in the Wuyue area, the cultural center of the time. Many later generations followed his style and changed the situation that many famous artists in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties would learn from Cao Wei’s Epigraph for Shou Shan and Epigraph for Shang Zun Hao in order to master in official script. It also stopped the trend of official script to be more and more rigid like regular script. As a result, this promoted the revival of offical script and pushed the official script to another peak in Ming and Qing dynasty after its first peak in Han.Song Jue learned from Epigraph for Xia Cheng, which has an ancient and vigorous style, combining seal script and official script together.Song Jue took the best part of it but did not fully accept the weird glyphs. The composition of some of his works is obviously influenced by the Epigraph for Cao Quan and other Han steles, with sparse word spacing and dense line spacing, which was obviously different from the practice of almost equivalent rows and columns spacing in the Epigraph for Xia Cheng. It shows that he not only inherited the tradition but also discarded some of it.He learnt from the ancient but was not limited by it,so he had formed his own style, which was commendable.Song Jue used technique of seal script to write official scripts with round, thick and vigorous strokes. His work had flexible structure and different shapes according to different characters. His composition also varied due to the different sizes of his work, which achieved the unity of form and content. All these are important inspirations for me to study and create Han inscription.
